The arabian horse is one of the oldest horse breeds of the world. In 2007 it was elected the most popular horse in the world based on the number of websites by breeders and associations <http://www.horsetradition.com/>.

This desert breed has been bred pure for thousands of years. It is the absolute champion of endurance and loved for its refinement and character. A nomad’s life literally depended on its horse when crossing the desert and so the best horses could even be kept inside tents for protection.

Arabians are known for their strong character, intelligence, sensibility and absolute loyalty to one particular person. To bond an arabian, you need to treat it with respect.

The breed excels at endurance competitions under tough conditions. It also performs well in other equestrian sports and is loved in shows due to its flashy appearance. For these and many more reasons, the Arabian horse has been used to improve many other horse breeds.

Some of those crossbreds are also very popular and have studbooks of their own. For example shagya, gidran and anglo arabians. The latter is a cross between arabians and thoroughbreds, both well known racing horses, which excels in sports like eventing.

Colours

Arabians come in black, bay, brown and chestnut. Especially liver chestnuts are desired. Grey is abundant. There are no known dilutions in the breed, though a few horses might be light black.

There are several white spotting genes in the breed, including W3, W15 and W19 <link> in their corresponding families. More are suspected, though they are simply identified as 'sabino' until their true source has been identified. Rabicano is also seen and - in conjunction with sabino roaning - may have such a profound effect it can even appear to be classic roan. True roan, however, does not exist in the arabian horse.
